Publisher Elsevier accidentally exposed the usernames and passwords of some of its subscribers earlier this month.

It is not clear how many users, many of whom are likely to be academics, were affected, nor how long their log-in information was exposed. The data leak was first reported by Motherboard.

“The issue has been remedied,” an Elsevier spokesperson said in an emailed statement to Inside Higher Ed. “We are still investigating how this happened, but it appears that a server was misconfigured due to human error. We have no indication that any data on the server has been misused.”

“As a precautionary measure, we have informed the Dutch data protection authority. We are notifying individuals and have reset accounts where appropriate."
