Three national higher education associations have called on their members to commit to using data and analytics to inform strategic decisions.

The Association for Institutional Research, Educause and the National Association of College and University Business Officers published a joint statement this week titled “Analytics Can Save Higher Education. Really.

“We strongly believe that using data to better understand our students and our own operations paves the way to developing new, innovative approaches for improved student recruiting, better student outcomes, greater institutional efficiency and cost containment, and much more,” the statement said.

“With the change-making capacity of analytics, we should be coming aggressively forward to harness the power of these new tools for the success of our institutions and our students. However, so far higher education has failed to follow talk with decisive action.”

The statement outlines six principles to accelerate the use of data in higher education, including making an institutional commitment to analytics, investing what you can and acting quickly.
