Harvard University president Lawrence Bacow has apologized for comments comparing new fundraising rules to the 13th Amendment, which freed the slaves. The comments were referring to the university's efforts to make it easier for donors to contribute. Bacow was alluding to how schools and colleges at Harvard could not monopolize certain donors, and how alumni could donate to any of the university's schools, The Boston Globe reported.

In an email to university members, Bacow apologized for his comments and said he understood how his analogy could have "unsettled" some Harvard staff. He expressed his regret for making those statements.
