Around 70 students of the University of Texas at Austin were involved in a group message that could get them in hot water, reports The Houston Chronicle.

The students were members of a GroupMe chat for their online introductory anthropology class. Their professor said he told the students that group messages discussing course work were against the rules. Information about an upcoming test was allegedly shared between the students.

After hearing about the messages, the professor sent out an email outlining the violation of his policy for students not to discuss the labs or exams. The students could face automatic failing grades or expulsion.

The professor documented the chat and referred the issue to the dean of students. According to the email the professor sent out, every student had signed a course honesty agreement.

Some UT students have taken to Reddit to complain about the proposed blanket punishments. As some commenters brought up, students could have easily muted the chat or not checked it without actually leaving the group.
