The Faculty Senate at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln last week approved clarifications to the process by which professors may be dismissed, the Lincoln Journal-Star reported. The changes stem from the controversial 2017 dismissal of Courtney Lawton, a graduate student and lecturer in English who was filmed protesting and flipping off a member of the campus chapter of the political group Turning Point USA. Lawton’s effective termination landed Nebraska on the American Association of University Professors’ censure list for violations of academic freedom.

New language includes specific procedures for immediate suspensions and different kinds of discipline, along with reporting processes and timelines and faculty committee responsibilities regarding due process. Faculty members may also request and have an open hearing and obtain a transcript afterward. The changes still need to be reviewed by campus administrators and the university system’s Board of Regents.
