Rhode Island School of Design plans to hire 10 faculty members focused on race, decolonization and cultural representation, Artnet News reported.

RISD, which is facing a $50 million deficit due to COVID-19, received an anonymous gift that will pay for the first five years of the professors’ salaries. RISD is currently conducting a search, and the 10 new professors are set to be hired in time for next fall.

“In order to create a more racially just RISD, we must do more than simply combat racism where we find it,” RISD president Rosanne Somerson told Artnet News. “We must be proactively anti-racist in principle and practice, and make consequential, scaled changes throughout the institution.”
