The Los Angeles Community College District will let its contract with the local sheriff’s department expire without renewal on Dec. 31 and explore unarmed security service options, the Los Angeles Daily News reported Saturday.

The sheriff’s department has provided security for the community colleges, for which the district pays $25 million per year, for 19 years. College officials sat in negotiations for five months with the department but were unable to come to an agreement for a new contract “in light of the current COVID-19 environment,” officials said. The sheriff’s department has said the district is exploring unarmed service models.

College officials said the district will conduct an assessment of campus safety needs and then issue a request for proposals, for which they would accept a new proposal from the sheriff’s department.
