Thirteen people, including current and former University of Texas students, have been arrested and charged in connection with trafficking LSD, fentanyl and methamphetamine pills to UT students in Austin, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Friday.
The Justice Department said search warrants executed Thursday resulted in seizures of "large quantities" of fentanyl, Adderall, Xanax, LSD, marijuana and hallucinogenic mushrooms, as well as several firearms and approximately $100,000 in cash.
All 13 defendants were charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance, and four of the defendants were also charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering. If convicted, defendants could face prison sentences of 10 years to life on the drug charge, and up to 20 years for money laundering.
"What is particularly disturbing about this case is that what appeared to be extremely well-educated and talented people who had many opportunities in life to choose from, instead focused their business acumen and education in dealing illegal, dangerous and counterfeit drugs," U.S. Attorney Gregg Sofer said during a press conference about the arrests, according to the Associated Press.
