A group of faculty and staff members at Austin Community College has called on the Board of Trustees to raise their wages in response to rising costs of living.

The employees attended a board meeting Monday to advocate for the pay raise. Some held signs that called for a 10 percent raise for all employees, KXAN reported. The group from the college’s faculty and staff union, a local chapter of the American Federation of Teachers, also asked that the minimum wage for all Austin Community College workers be raised to $22 per hour. The Austin City Council voted to raise the minimum wage for city employees to that amount last week.

Neil Vickers, chief financial officer at the college, told KXAN that his office recommended offering the option of a 5 percent pay raise or an additional $5,000 to employees. He also suggested increasing the minimum wage from $15.60 per hour to $18.

The board is expected to make a decision on July 12, when it is scheduled to approve a budget.
