Vermont Law School plans to open a new graduate school as part of a restructuring plan in July, according to an announcement Tuesday. The effort was funded by an anonymous $8 million donation, the largest gift in the school’s history. The institution will soon be known as Vermont Law and Graduate School.
“Nearly two years ago, we began a process to chart the school’s future with input from hundreds of faculty, staff, trustees, students and the community,” Glenn Berger, chair of the school’s Board of Trustees, said in the announcement. “We’re excited to today announce a bold vision for Vermont Law and Graduate School, with a new name and structure that will elevate our leading-edge graduate programming, increase enrollment and strengthen our commitment to social change.”
Law school administrators say plans are in the works to introduce several new master’s degree programs in climate and environmental policy and animal protection policy.
“The expanded programming will meet the growing base of non-traditional students and students seeking online opportunities, and reflects a refined vision for how to best prepare students for success,” Rodney Smolla, the incoming inaugural president of Vermont Law and Graduate School, said in the announcement. “The social justice challenges the world faces today are complex and require an ever-evolving set of tools and skills to solve them.”
