College Promises to Stop Charging for Textbooks

West Texas A&M University president Walter V. Wendler announced in August that the university would stop charging students for textbooks, starting in fall 2024. All required textbook fees will be covered by individual college funds, as allocated by the deans. 

  • The plan to cut paid textbooks from student fees has been in motion since 2018, as Wendler asked faculty members to reduce textbook use. 
  • The goal is to support affordability; the Texas A&M system committed to not raising tuition or academic fees until 2025. 
  • Nationally, faculty members agree textbooks and course materials cost too much and colleges should embrace open educational resources as an alternative, according to a 2019 survey by Inside Higher Ed
