Dear Paul Graham: I read about Y Combinator, your tech startup boot camp, in this month's Wired Magazine. With all due respect, I found most of the startups you chose to mentor to be kinda boring. Do we really need another music streaming, meal finding, social networky, Facebook gaming site or mobile app? Ask yourself this: What does the world really need that can be: a) delivered via a browser? b) delivered via a mobile device?

Thought experiment. You are teaching a course that has a significant online (distance) component. Your mobile platform will be used to access both the LMS (learning management system) and e-mail for responding to students. You are not looking for a main laptop replacement, and will not be doing course authoring or virtual meetings with this mobile platform. You want to be able to accomplish the following tasks:

Create your job. Stop counting on someone else to employ you. Take risks, add value, and create something new. You know a hell of a lot about education. You develop, manage, and integrate a range of technologies. You know what services in higher ed could be delivered faster, better, and cheaper if someone started the right company or developed the right application or service. That person should be you.

Can we declare the era of the timed exam (almost) completely over? 6 Reasons to End (Almost) All Timed Exams*: 1. Level the Playing Field: Does it really make sense anymore to separate some timed exam and un-timed exam groups? When all exams are un-timed, nobody needs to request accommodation or make separate arrangements. What do we lose by setting time boundaries on exams? Seems to me we are often testing the ability to take a test within a certain amount of time, rather than student understanding.

The Company Town: The Industrial Edens and Satanic Mills That Shaped the American Economy by Hardy Green. I live in a company town. Wouldn't have it any other way. Hardy Green misses the college town in his tour of the history and workings of the company town, an oversight in an otherwise excellent book.
