September is upon us and with the beginning of another academic year comes a fresh crop of undergraduate students jostling their way into universities’ hallways and classrooms. As a researcher in postsecondary education who also teaches undergrads, I take a direct interest in the first-year experience. Whenever I have a teaching assignment with first-year students, I try to have a conversation with them about the decision they made to come to university, the factors that influenced their choice, and how their experiences in university compare to those in high school.

I am writing this short text from a computer whose keyboard settings are not English but Icelandic, a language with slightly more characters than English. According to the Chair of my program – my application had to be “pretty dismal” in order to be rejected. She was being flippant of course; she had carefully reviewed my transcript and suggested a couple of courses to take to increase my chances of acceptance. However her point really was to warn me that being a part-time student meant that I wouldn’t be offered funding, implying that there wasn’t much reason to reject my application, assuming that I met all eligibility requirements.

The University of Venus question of the month: What is it that you do to relax when you do not want to be your academic self?

I hit the ground running after my summer vacation, and I’ve had meeting after meeting that have reminded me that mentoring continues throughout your career. There have been different times in my career when I have mentored students, peers, and even helped out people senior to me. Likewise, today I still have trusted mentors that I approach about my concerns or particular situations.
