Drunken assholes in a rage don't make decorous fans. The NCAA, whose annual meeting in Nashville UD just attended, can dither all it wants about what it calls bad bench decorum -- players and coaches and fans at bigtime football and basketball games who say very very naughty things very very loudly -- but for a lot of students and alumni the American university represents above all an institution which offers luxury sports venues in which they can express a cult fervency that would make the hitlerjugend blush.

A new correspondent writes:I just started teaching part time for a local college and have applied for a full time position available this fall. Little birdies have told me I should be receiving an offer soon.great news! I am currently ABD, and will be finishing up my dissertation in the next 6 months or so. I have really enjoyed the department I am working in, and will be thrilled to be full time in the fall.

A new and very perceptive correspondent writes:I'm a long-time lurker, writing now in hopes you and your readers can help explain academic funding models (ha!). I'm an ABD in a fairly highly ranked department at a large R1 university. Huge U. funds itsdepartments based on a formula in which the largest factor is the mean of undergraduate course enrollments over the prior small number of years.

One of the oddest things about being a homeowner in a university town is the stuff that gets left in our yard. Our neighborhood has a lot of student housing, and open street parking, so students are always around and leave us all sorts of little offerings.

Provost Marty Krauss, whose field is mental retardation, wrote a letter to a professor at her institution, Brandeis University... a letter which did not have the effect she, its writer, intended. Instead of gaining the faculty member's cooperation in what she asked of him, she alienated him, and, on top of that, ended up alienating almost the entire faculty of the university.
