  • The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday approved a bill to provide more flexibility in campus-based aid programs at colleges that have been affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The bill would extend certain deadlines, allow colleges' need to be evaluated in light of the hurricanes, and allow for the distribution of additional funds to these institutions. Campus-based aid programs include the Work-Study Program, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, and Perkins Loans.
  • Between 16 and 19 percent of adults in the work force, who were pursuing work-related education, took some form of postsecondary education, according to a new report by the National Center for Education Statistics. The report examines many kinds of work-related education, based on data from 2000-1.
  • Utah State University grounded its fleet of 15-passenger vans Tuesday, a day after one of them flipped over in a crash, killing eight students and an instructor, the Associated Press reported. A rash of incidents involving college teams in 2000 led the National Transportation Safety Board to issue a series of warnings about their use.
