Richard Joel, president of Yeshiva University for the last 13 years, has announced plans to retire. Joel made the announcement while noting some financial success and the formation of a joint venture between Yeshiva University and the Montefiore Health System for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, which is academically well respected but has created financial pressures on the university, which faces many other fiscal problems as well. Joel was the first nonrabbi to lead Yeshiva and thus the first not to head the rabbinical seminary in addition to the university.
