Prose and Purpose

My blog for this week will be my actual Welcome Week 2014 speech to the Class of 2018.

I serve on an excellent board of education and I have worked with enough boards over enough years to be able to identify the difference between an effective board and a detrimental board.

I just recently completed being the first reviewer of the periodic update prepared for an institution’s regional accreditor.

The World Trade Center always had a very special place in my heart.

I have been thinking about my remarks to our new faculty who will begin their careers at Hofstra in a few weeks.

A university campus during August is often a very different place. Summer sessions are winding down, most faculty and most students are not here until late in the month.

I oversee one well located parking lot for administrators on campus and there is always significant interest in getting the OK to park in that lot.

Very often in higher education, when we look at enrollment, the numbers are aggregated. We look at the headcount of students or the number of full-time students or the number of new students or transfer students, etc.
