Maria Harper-Marinick will step down as chancellor of Arizona's Maricopa Community College District when her contract expires next May, the district said Tuesday. Faculty leaders at nine of the district's 10 colleges in April voted no confidence in Harper-Marinick, who has led the large community college district for three years and worked there for nearly 28 years. The groups accused her of being complicit in attempts to undermine shared governance, following a dispute last year between faculty members and the district's governing board over the process used to negotiate faculty pay and benefits.

In a written statement, Harper-Marinick said the district made progress on her priorities, which include bringing stability and improving budget and financial processes.

“We have made significant progress and have implemented changes that will yield positive long-term outcomes. The work we do is critical to our state and to those we serve,” she said. “I hope the impactful strategies we have begun realizing through the transformation will continue. Our community expects and deserves nothing less.”
