Fixing the Credit Evaluation System: A Blueprint for the 21st-Century Learner

A decision to award or deny academic credit for prior coursework and other relevant college-level learning can significantly shorten or increase a learner's time and cost to credential completion—and may impact whether they enroll at all. Yet to date, few national efforts focused on transfer have directly examined the underpinnings of the learning evaluation process, commonly called credit evaluation. One big exception: The Learning Evaluation and Recognition for the Next Generation (LEARN) Commission, launched in 2024 by AACRAO and Sova, with support from Ascendium Education Group. 

This webcast will examine the commission’s work on traditional institution-to-institution course transfer, high school dual enrollment course credit transfer, credit for prior learning and new applications of credit mobility technology/AI. It will also look at the commission’s recent report, which includes recommendations for institutions and other stakeholders to evolve learning evaluation policy and practice for the 21st century, with an eye toward increasing applicability of prior learning in all its forms and based on the credential the student is seeking.
