Southern Vermont College announced Monday that it is closing. It becomes the latest in a string of colleges -- generally small, private institutions in New England -- to close.

An announcement by the college noted that the New England Commission of Higher Education has just voted to withdraw accreditation, effective at the end of August. The college's announcement said of this move, "Please note that NECHE’s concern was limited to SVC’s finances only. The quality of the education we offer, institutional integrity, the transferability of courses and the value of our degrees are not in question."

The college has 358 undergraduates, according to federal data.

Green Mountain College, also a small private college in Vermont, announced in January that it would close.
