The number of Ohio legislators who do not have a college degree has risen to 31 today from 5 in the late 1990s, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. The article quotes some lawmakers and policy makers as saying they think that trend is at least partially responsible for Ohio's lukewarm financial support for higher education in recent years, but the degree-less legislators scoff at that argument. "I think the institutions of higher learning made it difficult to go out and spread the good word that they could handle their money wisely," said one.
Construction companies that had contracts with the University of Connecticut significantly ratcheted up their contributions to the university's foundation after getting the work, according to an investigation by the Hartford Courant. Officials of the foundation and the companies said there was no connection between the contracts and the increased donations, but the findings drew concern fromstate officials.
The Daily Californian reports on a possible new kind of fraternity hazing: A student pledging Pi Kappa Phi at the University of California at Berkeley was apparently shot 30 times with BB guns by members of the Greek organization as they tried to get him to smoke marijuana and reveal information about the whereabouts of other pledges.
