Episcopal Leader at Yale, Under Fire, Resigns

September 9, 2014

Rev. Bruce M. Shipman has resigned as priest-in-charge of the Episcopal Church at Yale University, amid a controversy over a letter to the editor he wrote, The New Haven Register reported. The letter to The New York Times responded to an article about rising anti-Semitism in Europe by saying that the author of that piece "makes far too little of the relationship between Israel’s policies in the West Bank and Gaza and growing anti-Semitism in Europe and beyond." Critics said that he was blaming Jews for anti-Semitism, a charge he denied. Shipman told the Register that he resigned because he did not have enough support from his board. He said he had received "an avalanche of hate mail” since his letter was published.
