Should Academics Try to Minimize Plane Trips?

October 19, 2015

A petition campaign being launched today by 56 academics urges professors, colleges and disciplinary associations to take steps to minimize the need to fly. The petition urges colleges and academic groups to include flight time in measuring the environmental impact of their activities. The petition notes that many professors and colleges have expressed support for the environmental movement but done little to minimize flying. Background information provided by the organizers suggests that national or international meetings take more steps to permit virtual participation, and that groups consider having more regional meetings (to which one might travel by rail or bus) and fewer national meetings.
