Pro-Palestinian protesters shouted down the mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat, while he was speaking Wednesday at San Francisco State University. Video of the incident shows Barkat continuing to speak with a small group of students while protesters along a wall shout, “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”
A statement from the university in response reads, in part, “We emphatically assert that all are welcome here. To support an inclusive environment, we encourage our students to engage in thoughtful and respectful dialogue about difficult or controversial issues. While there is a right to dissent, we must also uphold a right to speak and to learn. Unfortunately, members of our community who attended the event were deprived of an opportunity to hear from a speaker invited by a student organization.”
The students who disrupted the event, the statement continues, “acted outside the bounds of respectful dialogue and in conflict with [university policy]. … The university takes violation of its conduct policies extremely seriously, and a full investigation of the incident will occur through the dean of students and the student conduct code. … In addition to investigating this particular incident, the university will be examining our own response mechanisms to better ensure respectful dialogue and compliance with the student code of conduct is fostered at future student events.”
