A student at the University of Wisconsin at Madison has been accused of sexual assault by dozens of female students and is now in jail facing criminal charges in more than a dozen of the cases. After one accusation against Alec Cook became public, another woman came forward to accuse him, followed by another and still others who described similar attacks. Bail conditions set for Cook bar him from campus.
A university statement said, "Based on the severity of the allegations and the potential impact on the campus community, the university is disclosing that this student is under emergency suspension from the institution."
Lawyers for Cook said that the accusations -- which have attracted nationwide attention -- constitute a "modern-day character assassination."
