Thomas Pleger, president of Lake Superior State University, died Sunday at the age of 48. He started as president at Lake Superior State in 2014, after 21 years in various positions in the University of Wisconsin System. Pleger was suddenly hospitalized Wednesday, and he had brain surgery Thursday. He was recovering from that surgery when he died.

On social media, people who knew Pleger said that he was a constant advocate for public higher education, including the role of the liberal arts within state colleges and universities. Several cited the video of Pleger below and said that lecture reflected his understanding of and commitment to public higher education.
