Mercyhurst University is removing public honors -- such as naming a park and other areas on campus in his honor -- for its longest serving president, William P. Garvey, who died in 2017, Erie News Now reported. Garvey was recently named by the Erie Catholic Diocese as someone about whom credible allegations of sexual abuse have been made. Garvey resigned in 2005, after 25 years as president, after six men accused him of sexual abuse when they were minors years before. Garvey and the university denied the allegations at the time.

In the years since the allegations were made, some have called for the university to remove the public honors for Garvey, but nothing has happened until now.
