The Board of Trustees of Sierra Nevada University has approved an agreement allowing Sierra Nevada to become part of the University of Nevada at Reno. The merger still requires approvals by the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents and several key regulatory bodies. Under the agreement, the Sierra Nevada University campus would become part of the University of Nevada at Reno, and Sierra Nevada programs and operations would be gradually merged with those of Nevada.

Sierra Nevada students will continue their studies on their campus for the 2021-22 academic year. Sierra Nevada faculty members will deliver 2021-22 academic year courses as scheduled, and athletic and extracurricular programs will continue unchanged. In consultation with, and subject to approval by, the U.S. Department of Education and the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, a "thoughtful integration is planned." Sierra Nevada students would be offered paths to either SNU or UNR degrees.

Nine faculty members at Sierra Nevada were recently told that their jobs would not continue in the fall.
