The Week in Admissions News

Two-month sentence in admissions scandal; Elizabeth City repays student debt; Black enrollment drop in Illinois; studying while parenting; do graduates feel employable?

By  Scott Jaschik

  • Mark Hauser was sentenced to two months in prison, a fine of $250,000 and 300 hours of community service in the college admissions scandal.
  • Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina will clear debt for students with outstanding balances on their accounts from the past academic year due to pandemic hardships.
  • A disproportionate drop in the number of Black students enrolled in college prompted Illinois higher education leaders to propose increased state support for and shifts in how higher education is promoted and delivered to students of color.
  • Student parents feel stressed and isolated, but most don’t know about campus mental health resources, according to a new report.
  • About one-fifth of recent graduates of two- and four-year institutions said their college education did not provide the skills necessary for their first job, and about half decided not to apply to entry-level positions because they felt they were not qualified.
