The exhausting debate between STEM and humanities has become higher education’s defining dysfunction. We argue ourselves in circles: STEM brings jobs but lacks soul, humanities cultivate wisdom but can’t pay the bills. Universities lurch between these poles, desperately pushing science as economic salvation one year, defending liberal arts as democracy’s guardian the next. Meanwhile, enrollments drop, costs for a four-year degree soar past six figures and ChatGPT writes better essays than most undergraduates.
We’re trapped in this futile binary because we’re missing the obvious third element. While we debate observation versus interpretation, science versus humanities, our students are outside the lecture hall doing something entirely different: They’re making things. They’re designing apps, editing videos, building communities and crafting visual narratives on social media, coding solutions to problems we haven’t even identified yet. They intuitively understand what we refuse to see—that the future belongs not just to those who understand or interpret, but to those who create.
The missing element is Design, and I mean this with a capital D, not as artistic decoration or trendy “design thinking” workshops, but as a fundamental third domain of human knowledge. If science governs our relationship with the natural world through observation and experimentation, and humanities governs our understanding of human experience through study and reflection, then design governs the built world through systematic making and building. It’s the discipline of transforming ideas into reality, of imagining what doesn’t exist and bringing it into being.
This isn’t a new observation buried in academic theory; it’s hiding in plain sight. Look at any thriving program on campus: data science (combining scientific analysis, human interpretation and designed visualization), digital humanities (merging humanistic inquiry with designed interfaces), user experience/user interface programs (teaching creation, not just critique), biodesign (fusing biological understanding with human needs and built solutions). These aren’t marginal experiments. They’re where the energy is, where students flock, where the future is being invented.
C. P. Snow identified the “two cultures” problem in 1959, describing a “gulf of mutual incomprehension” between scientists and “literary intellectuals.” But that was a different era, when the divide seemed bridgeable through better communication. Today’s chasm is structural, and it’s widened by forces Snow couldn’t have imagined: artificial intelligence that renders traditional academic skills obsolete, pandemic-accelerated digital transformation, climate crises demanding unprecedented innovation, mental health epidemics requiring both medical and human understanding. The old binary doesn’t just fail to serve us. It actively prevents us from addressing these challenges.
The Academic Trinity
Think of it by way of an analogy: Higher education sits on a stool with only two legs. No matter how carefully we balance, no matter how we redistribute weight between STEM and humanities, the structure remains fundamentally unstable. We need that third leg, design. Not for aesthetic balance but for basic stability. This isn’t about fairness or inclusion; it’s about structural necessity.
Science teaches us to understand what is. Humanities teaches us to interpret what it means. Design teaches us to create what could be. All three are systematic, disciplined and teachable. All three have methodologies, vocabularies, histories and theories. Yet only two are recognized as foundational to education, while design remains marginalized in art schools, relegated to vocational programs or awkwardly grafted onto existing departments as an afterthought.
Having spent decades developing curricula for general education courses, serving on gen ed committees and holding administrative positions that oversaw these programs, I’ve witnessed firsthand the damage this two-legged structure inflicts. I’ve sat through countless meetings where we’ve tried to “fix” gen ed by reshuffling the same tired distribution requirements, adding a diversity course here, a quantitative reasoning requirement there. But we never address the fundamental problem—that we’re asking students to understand and interpret the world, but we’re not teaching them how to shape it.
Students sense this disconnect viscerally. They sit in lecture halls, passively absorbing information, writing papers only professors read, demonstrating comprehension through assessments that feel increasingly detached from reality. Then they leave class and enter a world where creation is currency, where building a portfolio, designing a solution or making something new matters more than analyzing what already exists. No wonder gen ed feels like arbitrary hoops to jump through, obstacles between them and their “real” education.
The Design Imperative
The urgency of integrating design as a third pillar becomes clearer when we consider what’s actually happening in the world. AI doesn’t just threaten traditional academic jobs; it fundamentally redefines human value. When machines can analyze data better than scientists and write prose better than humanists, what’s left for humans? The answer is design, the uniquely human capacity to imagine what doesn’t exist, to synthesize across domains, to create solutions that are scientifically sound, humanistically wise and functionally elegant.
This is why students flock to campus makerspaces even when they’re not required. It’s why design thinking workshops fill instantly while traditional seminars struggle for enrollment. It’s why employers increasingly seek graduates who can “think like designers,” not because they need more aesthetics, but because they need people who can navigate ambiguity, prototype solutions, iterate based on feedback and create value where none existed before.
Consider what’s emerged in recent years. Libraries expanding into makerspaces, business schools integrating design courses, medical schools teaching human-centered design, engineering programs requiring studio-based learning. These aren’t fads or desperate attempts to appear relevant. They’re institutional recognitions that the ability to create, to design, is as fundamental as the ability to analyze or interpret.
Yet we still treat design as supplementary, a nice-to-have skill set rather than a foundational literacy. We bolt a design-thinking module onto existing curricula like adding a spoiler to a broken-down car, hoping it will somehow make the whole vehicle run better. It won’t. We need structural change.
A Practical Vision
What would higher education look like if we truly recognized design as a third pillar? Start with general education, that perennial problem child of undergraduate education. Instead of distribution requirements that feel like arbitrary check boxes, imagine gen ed as initiation into three fundamental literacies:
- Scientific literacy: Understanding natural systems through observation, measurement and experimentation. Learning how to ask questions the physical world can answer.
- Humanistic literacy: Interpreting human experience through analysis, critique and reflection. Learning how to understand meaning, context and value.
- Design literacy: Creating solutions through prototyping, iteration and synthesis. Learning how to transform understanding into action and ideas into reality.
Every student, regardless of major, would graduate conversant in all three languages. A biology major would understand not just how organisms function, but how scientific knowledge gets interpreted culturally and how to design interventions that, for instance, might improve health outcomes. An English major would grasp not just textual analysis, but how narratives function across media platforms and how scientific methods might reveal patterns in literature. An engineering student would learn not just technical problem-solving but humanistic ethics and the design of experiences, not just products.
This isn’t about adding more requirements or lengthening degree programs. It’s about recognizing that many courses already contain design elements; we just don’t name them as such. Every time students create a research proposal, develop an argument, structure a presentation or solve a complex problem, they’re engaging in design. The shift is in making this explicit, systematic and central, rather than accidental and peripheral.
The Resistance
I can already hear the objections. I’ve heard them for decades in committee meetings and administrative offices. “We don’t have resources for new programs.” But we’re not talking about new programs: We’re talking about recognizing and reorganizing what already exists. “Faculty aren’t trained in design.” But every scholar who’s crafted an argument, structured a course or developed a research program has engaged in design thinking. “This will water down disciplinary rigor.” On the contrary, it will strengthen it by connecting abstract knowledge to concrete application.
The real resistance isn’t practical. It’s cultural. Academia’s power structures are built on the two-cultures divide. Departments defend their turf, tenure committees reward narrow specialization and budget models pit disciplines against each other in zero-sum competition. Recognizing design as a third pillar would require rethinking these structures, redistributing resources and, most threateningly, acknowledging that the creative practitioners we’ve marginalized might have something essential to contribute.
But the cost of inaction is higher than the cost of change. As enrollment continues to decline, as students question the value of degrees that don’t prepare them to create, as society faces challenges that require not just understanding but innovative solutions, universities that cling to the two-culture model will find themselves increasingly marginalized.
The Path Forward
The transformation won’t happen overnight, but it can begin immediately. Start by auditing existing programs to identify where design already lives. You’ll find it everywhere, from scientific visualization to digital humanities, from social entrepreneurship to biomedical engineering. Name it, celebrate it and build on it.
Create design positions that aren’t confined to art departments but are distributed across the university. Hire faculty who can teach students not just to analyze user experience but to create it, not just to study systems but to build them, not just to critique culture but to shape it.
Most importantly, listen to students. They’re already voting with their feet, choosing programs that let them make and build, seeking mentors who can teach them to create. They understand intuitively what we resist intellectually, that in a world of infinite information and artificial intelligence, the ability to design, to imagine and create what doesn’t yet exist becomes our distinguishing human capacity.
Beyond the Binary
The future of higher education doesn’t lie in choosing between science and humanities, between STEM and liberal arts, between instrumental and intrinsic value. It lies in recognizing that human flourishing requires all three capacities: understanding the natural world, interpreting human experience and designing better futures.
This isn’t just an academic argument; it’s an existential imperative. Climate change won’t be solved by science alone, nor by humanistic critique, but by designing new ways of living. Social inequality won’t be addressed merely by analysis or empathy, but by creating more just systems. Mental health crises won’t be resolved only through medical intervention or therapeutic insight, but by designing environments and experiences that support human thriving.
From my emeritus position, watching new generations struggle with outdated structures while the world transforms around them, I see clearly what my still-embedded colleagues cannot—that the two-cultures debate is over. Not because one side won, but because both sides lost. While we argued about whether to emphasize STEM or humanities, students went elsewhere, to YouTube tutorials, coding boot camps, design workshops—anywhere they could learn to create rather than merely consume knowledge.
The third leg has always been there, waiting. We just refused to see it, too invested in our binary battle to notice that stability requires trinity. But once we acknowledge design’s essential role, once we build it into our foundations rather than treating it as decoration, higher education can finally become what students need and society demands—an engine not just for understanding and interpretation, but for creation and transformation.
