On Tuesday 2U, an online program management company, said it will acquire GetSmarter, an online education company that focuses on working professionals. The Maryland-based 2U has a significant presence in the online education market, but it has mostly focused on for-credit graduate-level work. In the announcement, 2U said the acquisition will enable the company to expand internationally (GetSmarter has offices in London and Cape Town) and offer shorter courses. According to the announcement, 2U will pay about $103 million to acquire the company.
