Who are the chief enrollment officers?

The American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers recently surveyed 300 of them for the first time on the subject since 2017, and it offers some answers.

Chief enrollment management officers, the survey found:

  • Are more likely to identify as a man and a non-Hispanic white male.
  • Are at least 30 years old, with a median age of 45 to 49 years old.
  • Have been in higher education their entire career.
  • Have been in their current chief enrollment manager position less than five years.
  • Report to the chief executive of the institution
  • Came to their current position from another position within the same institution, most likely from the admissions and/or recruitment area.
  • Work 50 hours or more a week.
  • Have four or more direct reports.

The reporting to the chief executive of the institution has changed from the previous two surveys. In 2014, half of the chief enrollment management officers reported to the president. In 2017, 52 percent did. This year, the total was 60 percent.

Those reporting to the provost fell during the time period.

The survey also asked about levels of stress caused by the pandemic. Nearly two-thirds (64 percent) said their stress was highly elevated, 31 percent said it was somewhat elevated and 5 percent said it was about the same.
