In today’s Academic Minute, Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville reveals why musical silence is just as important to a composition as the notes themselves. Margulis is an associate professor and director of the Music Cognition Lab at Arkansas, where her research is focused on the interface between musical structure and engagement, particularly in listeners without formal training, and especially as it occurs dynamically across the course of the listening experience.
