A friend of mine, at SUNY's School of Environmental Science and Forestry, forwarded me this email, which apparently went out to every student:

Lights Out week: March 31-April 4th
Can you live a week without lights?!
Get out of your comfort zone!
Lets try!!!!
This week, try to be aware of lights...do they all need to be on? Take
initiative! When you walk into a room with the lights on, turn them
off and open the blinds. If the room does not have any windows in it,
turn every other light off.
"Small actions can make a big difference."
Thanks!

While SUNY-ESF is a particularly green school (go figure!), "lights out week" is just one of a number of initiatives I've heard of, on various campuses, in the wake of Earth Hour. Some are suggesting that Earth Hour ought to be every week, or every month. Some are saying it should be all evening, one night a week. This one speaks to a full week, presumably to recur annually.

So far as I know, each of these suggestions arose spontaneously, which is testimony to the emotional impact Earth Hour has had/is having/will (perhaps) continue to have. I don't understand whether it was the simplicity of the event design, the idea of a truly global "wave" of demonstration and energy savings, or just the point we've reached in terms of social awareness of global warming. Regardless ...

... if we can only have as much impact from Earth Day!
