What's New 2 July 2011

Starting this week, we will be sharing What’s New at University of Venus every Saturday. We will highlight University of Venus around the web, what our writers are up to, and what we’re writing on our other blogs.

University of Venus around the web:

• University of Venus responded to the brutal attack on University of British Columbia graduate student Rumana Manzur with Refusing to be Silent, an article that included essays from Afshan Jafar, Melonie Fullick and Lee Skallerup Bessette, was published in the Views section at Inside Higher Ed, reposted at University Affairs (Canada) and listed at Ms. Magazine’s What We’re Reading Now.
• Mary Churchill’s August 2010 post, I Need a Wife, was featured in NOW Leadership’s June 2011 Newsletter - The Wave Has Hit the Shore.
• Anamaria Dutceac Segesten’s June 2011 post, Show and Tell: Creating Memorable Presentations, was included in ProfHacker’s June Teaching Carnival at The Chronicle.

Our writers:

• Janni Aragon - Effective July 1st Janni begin’s her two-year tenure as the Caucus Chair of the Academic Women’s Caucus at the University of Victoria. The AWC represents women faculty and librarians on campus. Some of the ongoing issues are : work/life balance, caregiving, recruitment and retention, and climate concerns on campus. “I hope to continue the great work by previous chairs and steering committees and see my role as one of encouraging women faculty to raise their campus and community profiles. I have already met with some trusted colleagues across campus and look forward to this position.”
• Lee Skallerup Bessette has contributed an essay to the forthcoming book Women Writing on Family entitled: Professional Nurturer: How to Write about Family (and still be seen as professional).
• Elizabeth Lewis Pardoe took part in the DAAD's Germany Today Program: 7 days, 8 institutions, 19 US & Canadian participants, little sleep, much learned!
• Ernesto Priego is thrilled he received the official letter confirming his PhD dissertation’s final amendments were approved. The title of his thesis is “The Comic Book in the Age of Digital Reproduction”, where he debates how theories of materiality illuminate how comics, webcomics, mobile comics apps and comic book culture fit within current debates of the future of the book. His supervisors were Dr Claire Warwick and Dr Melissa Terras (Centre for Digital Humanities, UCL), and his internal and external examiners were Dr Jakob Stougaard-Nielsen (School of European Languages, Culture and Society, UCL) and Dr Roger Sabin (Central St Martin's College of Arts and Design, University of the Arts London). Congratulations!
• Janine Utell just returned from the Project Narrative Summer Institute at The Ohio State University, where she worked on her book project, an as-yet untitled (again) study of couplehood and biography. She’s also had an essay, “Bloomsbury and Biographies of Erotic Life,” published in the most recent issue of Virginia Woolf Miscellany, and a review essay in the most recent Woolf Studies Annual.
