• Janni Aragon’s recent UVenus post on mentoring was featured at ICT Managing and Mentoring in South Africa.

What’s New With Our Writers:

• Janni Aragon gave a talk at UVIC Teaching Assistant training: “Social Media - Tweeting, Blogging, You Tube: how to utilize in your labs/tutorials.” She attended a pre-conference workshop “Teaching Gender and Politics: Notes from the Field” at the American Political Science Association, Seattle, WA. Janni also attended the Wired Words conference, which was hosted by the BC Federation of Writers and the Minority and Indigenous Women Instructor Network workshop at UVIC. The group is working on an edited anthology about teaching.
• Last week Anamaria Dutceac was a guest speaker for the Ph.D. course "Cultural Memory Narration, Manifestation and Politics" (University of Copenhagen, Ph.D. Programme in Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies), together with Ann Rigney and Sune Haubølle. She spoke about Collective Memory between Conflict and Reconciliation: The legacy of war and totalitarianism in Europe. Anamaria presented two papers at two conferences this past week. At the International Visual Methods conference at the Open University in Milton Keynes, she presented the paper "Eurosymbols in the city: Malmö and Copenhagen compared". At the conference "Remembering Dictatorship: State-Socialist Pasts in Post-Socialist Presents" at the University of Bristol, Anamaria discussed the paper "The Post-Communist Afterlife of Dissident Writers: The Case of Herta Müller.” She was also at The Guardian (UK) with Reworking the university rankings for a new higher ed market.
• Rosalie Arcala Hall was awarded a $1750 travel grant from the Philippine Commission on Higher Education to present her paper entitled "Camouflage and Tandong: Womanhood and Ethnicity in the Philippine Army and Police" in the Inter University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society conference at Chicago, IL on 21-23 October 2011. She just completed three short article contributions about Batanes, Philippines and Kali Code, Yogyakarta, Indonesia to the Asian Public Intellectual (API) Regional Project Book.
• Ernesto Priego on listening, Twitter and higher education at The Guardian (UK) with How Twitter Will Revolutionise Academic Research and Teaching.

• Rosalie Arcala Hall will be delivering a lecture at Ateneo de Naga University, Naga, Camarines Sur, Philippines on 13 October 2011 with sponsorship from the Philippine National Commission on Culture and the Arts. On 14-15 October, she is also presenting a paper entitled "Technology and its Place in the Army's Counterinsurgency Strategy" at the Philippine Sociological Association Conference in Naga, Camarines Sur.
• Janine Utell will be attending THATCamp Philly on 24 September -- an unconference on humanities and technology.
