The Indian government has for the first time given approval to highly ranked universities in the country to offer fully online academic programs starting in the coming academic year, Times Higher Education reported. The University Grants Commission said that accredited universities that are among the top 100 in the country's main ranking of institutions could offer online certificate, diploma and degree programs in fields that they already offer either in traditional or distance settings, and that have already graduated at least one cohort.
The expansion is designed to help India meet its goal of having at least 30 percent of young people in some kind of higher education.
