As expected, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has formally recommended that all freshmen living in dormitories be vaccinated for meningitis. A CDC committee in February urged that such a policy be adopted.
Anti-gay fliers -- some of them calling for gay people to be killed -- have appeared in recent weeks at Southern Oregon University. President Elizabeth Zinser sent a letter to all students and faculty members calling the fliers "hateful" and "homophobic," and urging people to help investigate who has been creating them.
The University of Nevada at Reno announced Friday that it is paying $11,400 to settle complaints from the U.S. Agriculture Department about the treatment of animals used in research at the university. Reno officials said that they disagreed with some of the findings, but wanted to resolve the case.
California State Polytechnic University at Pomona accidentally sent out several hundred acceptance letters to students who had not been admitted, The Whittier Daily News reported. The university blamed a database error.
The president of Quincy College was placed on leave last week, according to an article in The Quincy Patriot Ledger. The newspaper quoted sources saying that board members were investigating spending by the president, Sean Barry. But the newspaper also quoted Barry supporters as saying that local political fights were at the root of the disputes at the two-year college in Massachusetts.
