Lawmakers from the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives agreed Tuesday on compromise legislation that would increase federal spending on the National Endowments for the Humanities and for the Arts by $5 million each in the 2006 fiscal year, the House Appropriations Committee announced. The bill, crafted by a conference committee of members of both chambers, would boost funds for the NEH to $141 million, up from the $136 million the humanities agency is receiving this year, and for the NEA to $126 million, up from $121 million. The House had proposed giving the NEA $131 million, but the conferees settled on the lower Senate number.
The University of Wisconsin System announced Tuesday that it was suspending the awarding of "back up" appointments to administrators, pending a review of policies. The appointments have allowed administrators to move into other slots. The university has faced a huge backlash in recent months over a paid leave granted to a Madison administrator who had an affair with a graduate student.
The Atlanta College of Art may soon become part of the Savannah College of Art and Design, according to The Atlanta Business Chronicle. The Savannah college recently opened a campus in Atlanta.
