  • Four scholars have published a paper in The Forum challenging the much publicized research published there in March arguing that liberals dominate academe and that conservatives and practicing Christians are less likely to gain professorial jobs. The new paper -- by professors at the University of Pittsburgh -- argues that the original paper was "plagued by theoretical and methodological problems that render their conclusions unsustainable by the available evidence." Similar criticisms were offered when the original paper was published. Then, as now, the authors of that paper are standing by their findings.
  • Knoxville College's Board of Trustees fired Barbara Hatton as the institution's president during a closed-door meeting Monday, the Associated Press reported. The college has been struggling; in May, a dozen professors sued the institution and Hatton saying they hadn't been paid in more than a year.
  • The National Science Foundation on Monday appointed James Collins, the Virginia M. Ullman Professor of Natural History and Environment at Arizona State University, to head its directorate of biological sciences. Collins, whose research focuses on how species respond to ecological and evolutionary pressures, will oversee the NSF's $580 million annualspending on biological research.
  • The Association of American Universities has asked the U.S. Department of Defense to give universities more time to comment on proposed rules that would increase the requirements on what institutions must disclose about export-controlled information and technology.
