  • Albert Carnesale, chancellor of the University of California at Los Angeles, announced Wednesday that he would step down next year. Carnesale, chancellor at UCLA since 1997, was formerly provost at Harvard University.
  • The Environmental Protection Agency proposed new rules Wednesday governing research with human subjects. The new rules bar certain studies involving pesticides and children or pregnant women.
  • Eight universities have asked clothing manufacturers not to abandon plants -- and workers -- in the countries where the tsunami caused considerable devastation in December. The universities making the request are: Brown, Duke, Georgetown and Purdue Universities, and the Universities of California, Notre Dame, Illinois, and Michigan.
  • The National Academy of Engineering released a report Wednesday identifying ways that community colleges and four-year institutions can cooperate in engineering education.
