- The Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics has added eight new members and welcomed one former member back to its ranks. Joining the sports reform panel are: Val Ackerman, president of USA Basketball; Bill Asbury, vice president emeritus for student affairs at Pennsylvania State University; Anita DeFrantz, president of the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles; Janet Hill, vice president of Alexander & Associates; Steve Largent, former Oklahoma Representative; Andrea Fischer Newman, chairwoman of the Board of Regents of the University of Michigan; Jerry Porras, professor emeritus of organizational behavior at Stanford University; and Judy Woodruff, CNN contributor. Charles E. Young, former president of the Universities of Florida and California at Los Angeles, is rejoining the commission.
- Six current and former field hockey players at Frostburg State University pleaded guilty to hazing charges in an initiation rite that nearly killed a freshman woman, the Associated Press reported. The six women were fined $300 and placed on a year of probation for their roles in urging teammates to drink so much that one ended up hospitalized with a blood-alcohol level four times the legal limit.
- The Center of the American Experiment, a conservative group in Minnesota, on Tuesday launched a new Web site, IntellectualTakeout.com, for college students. Organizers said that they hoped to provide information and ideas in the battle of ideas on campus.
