Only 5 percent of prisoners nationwide are enrolled in college courses, even though that represents but a fraction of those who could benefit, according to a study being released today by the Institute for Higher Education Policy. The study reviews the evidence that college courses would prevent recidivism and offers ideas for bringing the courses to more prisoners.
Protesters prayed at the art gallery of Dutchess Community College Tuesday to protest an oil painting that is part of an exhibit honoring Hispanic Heritage Month, The Poughkeepsie Journal reported. The painting depicts Mary Magdalene holding a fallen Jesus, and is called "Mary Magdalene Holding Her Lover." College officials have rebuffed requests to remove the painting, citing the importance of academic freedom.
Eleven universities and the Food and Drug Administration will today announce a joint effort to study ways to reduce the high costs of prescription drugs. The universities in the effort, known as the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Technology and Education, are: Duquesne, Purdue and Rutgers Universities; the Illinois Institute of Technology; and the Universities of Connecticut, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota and Puerto Rico.
