  • The Lumina Foundation for Education on Monday announced a $3 million grant to help students at colleges that were affected by Hurricane Katrina. Of the funds, $2 million will go to students who attended community or technical colleges in Louisiana or Mississippi.
  • An estimated $14.5 million that the University of Notre Dame will earn for its Fiesta Bowl appearance will go to three academic projects. Notre Dame announced its plans for the proceeds Monday. Universities that are part of athletic conferences must share their takes with other conference members, so Notre Dame -- as an independent institution -- earns much more from its bowl appearance than other universities do. The funds will be used for financial aid, libraries, and a new science building.
  • At the request of the chair of the Graduate Affairs Committee of New York University’s student government, NYU has agreed to give striking graduate assistants two more days -- until Wednesday -- to return to work before losing their stipends for the spring. Over the next two weeks, the committee will form a university-wide group of elected graduate assistants that, according to a letter from President John Sexton, the university has agreed to speak with about graduate student issues.
  • Arizona State University has told Playboy that it the magazine can't use the university's logo, The Arizona Republic reported. The action followed a campus debate over whether the university should have banned students from posing for the magazine. University officials said that they couldn't regulate student decisions on posing, but could keep the logo out of the magazine.
  • Arson was the cause of a fire at a University of Georgia fraternity house that displaced 31 students, the Associated Press reported. Officials did not indicate who they thought set the fire.There were no injuries in the fire.
