  • A U.S. attorney on Tuesday told trustees of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey that they needed to accept federal supervision of the institution's management or they could face prosecution that could shut the institution down, The Star-Ledger reported. The university has faced a series of financial scandals in recent months, and the newspaper reported that the board, in a closed meeting, agreed to the demand. Academic control will reportedly remain with university administrators.
  • The Senate has confirmed Stephanie Monroe as assistant secretary of education for civil rights. Monroe previously worked in a number of Congressional positions, most recently as a staff member for the Senate Budget Committee.
  • The University of Virginia is taking over as the academic home of Semester at Sea, and will award credit to participants in the program. Semester at Sea is a study abroad program in which students travel to various regions by ship, taking courses while traveling. Students from around the country participate. For the last 20 years, the University of Pittsburgh has been the program's home and has awarded credit, but relations between Pitt and the program fell apart this year. Pitt expressed concerns about how the program dealt with potential safety problems, but the program said that students had never been in danger and that Pitt described the problems inaccurately.
  • A faculty panel at the University of North Dakota has recommended that the choir director be fired for engaging in inappropriate behavior, the Associated Press reported. University officials have said that the director, Anthony Reeves, failed to adequately supervise a student trip to Europe. Reeves has denied wrongdoing and has accused the university of trying to get rid of him because he is gay. According to the AP, Reeves collapsed Friday during the faculty panel's hearing, and is being treated for stress-related seizures.
  • Shane Hawkins, who has been indicted for a role in a basketball scandal at Barton County Community College, in Kansas, has quit his job as an assistant basketball coach at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, the AP reported. A total of five coaches and former coaches at Barton County have been indicted in the case, which involves allegations of lying about students' performance in correspondence courses, inappropriate use of student aid funds, and other charges.
