  • The European Union on Wednesday released more details of its plans to create a European Institute of Technology -- an international institution designed to rival American universities.
  • Thousands of applicants to the law school at the University of California at Berkeley received an e-mail implying that they had been admitted, and a second e-mail telling them to disregard the first, Knight Ridder reported. Boalt Hall has apologized for the error and told the news service that most applicants were taking it well.
  • The National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division II Committee on Infractions on Wednesday placed Oklahoma Panhandle State University on three years' probation after an investigation found that its former head softball coach had engaged in unethical conduct. The association concluded  that the coach had given two term papers to a player so that she could then turn them in for a course the coach was teaching. Officials at Oklahoma Panhandle said in a statement Wednesday that the university no longer employed the coach in any capacity.
