  • The Senate Appropriations Committee approved a supplemental 2006 spending bill Tuesday that would provide $30 million in aid for colleges in Louisiana and Mississippi that "sustained damage or incurred recovery or response costs from the hurricanes which ravaged the Gulf Coast." The money, which would be provided through the U.S. Education Department's Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, was added to the bill by Sens. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) and Mary Landrieu (D-La.). The bill also includes a fund that could provide $300 million or more in "bridge loans" to institutions affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita last year.
  • The death of a family member or close friend hurts the academic performance of college students in the term the death occurs, but has little impact in the following semester, a researcher at Purdue University has found. Heather Servaty-Seib, an assistant professor of education, says the findings suggest that campus health officials need to do a better job identifying and helping bereaved students as soon as possible.
  • Washington State University has issued a reprimand to Don Marbut, head baseball coach, for overstating his academic credentials. The university investigated Marbut's background after an article in The Seattle Times questioned numerous references to Marbut having a degree and or teaching certificate awarded by Saint Martin's University, in Washington State. Washington State wrote that Marbut did indicate in applying for his job that he had a certificate and teaching certification, but the university found that while he enrolled in a teacher education program at Saint Martin's, he never completed it. The university said that Marbut said any errors were unintentional.
  • Stephen Joel Trachtenberg announced today that he will retire next summer as president of George Washington University next summer, after 19 years in the position. At GW, Trachtenberg is credited with major increases in prominence, applications and fund raising. He has also overseen numerous building projects at the university. Prior to serving as George Washington's president, he was president of the University of Hartford for 11 years.
  • Nebraska Book Company has announced that it plans to buy College Book Stores of America, which would nearly double, to about 240, the number of campus stores that the combined company would manage. The companies did not disclose terms of the agreement.
