- A member of the Nevada Board of Regents is proposing that all employees at public colleges and universities -- not just police officers -- be able to go through some basic law enforcement training, and be allowed to carry guns, The Las Vegas Sun reported. Stravros Anthony, the regent, told the newspaper: "You're allowing institution employees to step up to the plate and say, 'I'm for standing up and defending our institution.'" Although professors would be among those eligible to participate, faculty leaders are dubious of the idea.
- The women who will soon lead half of the Ivy League universities gathered at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study Wednesday and considered their progress and remaining obstacles to advancement for women at research universities, the Associated Press reported. Ruth Simmons, president of Brown University, predicted that their success would prompt more institutions to hire women. The AP quoted her as saying: "When it starts to become the issue of being the last Ivy League school to have a woman president -- who wants to do that?"
- The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a bill to reauthorize the National Science Foundation. The bill would, among other things, authorize appropriations at levels that would keep the NSF on a plan to double research support over 10 years, allow for the creation of new programs to help scientists starting their careers or seeking to conduct high-risk research, and authorize new scholarships to encourage more people to train to become math and science teachers.
- The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has announced new rules for research reactors, many of which are located on college and university campuses. The new rules add additional fingerprinting and criminal history checks of employees.
- The U.S. Air Force Academy has expelled 18 students and placed 13 on probation, after the students were found guilty of cheating on an exam.
- The National Clearinghouse on Academic Worklife is a new, online resource with numerous policies, reports, articles and resources. The site was recently unveiled by the University of Michigan's Center for the Education of Women.
- IMG, a sports event and media company, on Tuesday announced the purchase of the Collegiate Licensing Company, which represents nearly 200 colleges, universities, bowl games, and conferences on their trademarks. Financial terms of the deal were not announced.
