The Art Institutes, a system of for-profit colleges, will close its eight remaining campuses by the end of the month, The New York Times reported Monday.

According to the Department of Education, roughly 1,700 students across the country will be affected. Many were shocked when they received the news in an email Friday, just after they completed final exams for the summer quarter. The email read in part, “The Art Institutes do not anticipate any further communication,” the Times reported.

The system closed about 20 other locations in 2018, following a loss of accreditation and a $95 million settlement in 2015 over fraud allegations. Enrollment has also fallen since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The campuses set to close at the end of September are in Atlanta; Austin, Tex.; Dallas; Houston; San Antonio; Miami; Tampa, Fla.; and Virginia Beach, Va.
