The University of Minnesota rescheduled a lecture by Dr. Anthony Fauci, originally planned for Tuesday evening, because of unrest on campus, CBS News reported.
Students demonstrated to demand the release of 11 pro-Palestinian protesters, including students and alumni, arrested Monday for reportedly barricading the entrance and exit to a campus building, according to campus officials. The Monday protest was organized by the student group UMN Students for a Democratic Society to call on the university to divest from companies that support Israel. (The university’s Board of Regents decided against divestment in August.) Campus officials reported that university police and deputies from the Hennepin County sheriff’s office entered the building through tunnels to arrest the protesters. No charges were filed for those arrested as of Wednesday morning, according to CBS News.
“The University of Minnesota made the difficult decision to reschedule yesterday night’s Distinguished Carlson Lecture featuring Dr. Anthony Fauci,” read a statement from the university. “Given the importance of this lecture and the unexpected and complicated incidents that occurred on campus in the preceding 24 hours, University officials determined it best to reschedule to ensure a great experience for attendees and our University community.”
The university promised tickets for Fauci’s lecture would be voided and the event would be rescheduled for a later date.
